This senior level professional team member will hold considerable administrative and accounting responsibilities. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for supervising certain aspects of the accounting staff’s preparation, posting, and balancing of financial records and operating reports, and for maintaining accounting control procedures. The position may supervise certain related fiscal activities, as well as specialize in components of the Foundation’s accounting and reporting work. The Assistant Controller will provide support to the Controller in maintaining key information systems, including MIP and Microsoft Access. The Assistant Controller’s work will be performed under direction of the UNT Foundation Controller and will entail wide latitude for independent technical judgment and self-management in accomplishing goals and objectives. The scope of responsibilities, complexity of assignments, specific knowledge requirements, and consequences of error all make this a significant, senior-level role within the UNT Foundation’s Accounting group.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare and/or review monthly operating reports and analysis in a timely and accurate manner.
- Prepare and/or review quarterly financial statements, including MD&A analysis, budget to actuals comparisons and analysis, and reserves reconciliations in a timely and accurate manner.
- Review monthly reconciliations of the Foundation’s private investments positions.
- Prepare and/or complete the monthly investment portfolio unitization and statements for participating accountholders, universities and university officials. Review the monthly financial performance and perform quality control procedures on the unitization.
- Prepare and/or review nonstandard journal entries for infrequent transactions.
- Ensure data integrity of Foundation books and records. Assist in management of automated information management system using MS Office Suite (Excel and Access) and customized accounting software with extensive interfaces between spreadsheets and databases. Work closely with Accounting Consultant to achieve accuracy, compliance and consistency. Ensure reconciliation of data between supporting records and information technology system.
- Assist the Controller on special projects requested by President or Board of Directors.
- Assist Controller in coordination of annual audits and internal audits for all University System entities.
- Assist Controller in supervision of accounting team deliverables, resolution of open items, and other projects as requested.
- Prepare and/or review materials for various Foundation Committee meetings, Board of Director meetings, and ad hoc meetings as directed by the Controller.
- Review accounting procedures and reports and oversee compliance with the policies of the UNT Foundation, FASB, GAAP, IRS, AICPA and all appropriate regulatory and standards agencies. Recommend implementation of new Foundation accounting processes or policies to Controller. Serve as resource on accounting issues for staff, Board of Directors, Foundation legal counsel and university advancement staff.
- Assist with training and education programs for Foundation staff, donors, account holders and university personnel.
- Review and update Foundation website (through webmaster) for accuracy and appropriateness.
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS
The position requires either an active Certified Public Accountant certification or Masters of Accounting degree. Five years of practical experience preferred. Knowledge should include excellent general accounting skills, plus a working understanding of investments, fiscal management, and financial analysis. The ability to consolidate and present accounting information in a clear and concise manner, while adapting to changing priorities, is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel is required, including working with advanced formulas and the ability to read and write macros. Demonstrated aptitude for learning new systems/software and applying them to automate and streamline work is desirable.
Successful candidates must demonstrate interpersonal skills required to establish and maintain effective working relationships, as well as the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse range of audiences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Non-profit organization experience, including a knowledge of fund accounting, is preferred; public university experience and the knowledge of endowment accounting is also helpful.
