We are seeking a Sr. Manager - Indirect Tax Audits to join our team in Irving, TX.
The Indirect Tax Team is responsible for the design, implementation, and defense of Indirect Tax strategies and positions. The Sr. Manager Indirect Tax Audits is an integral member of the tax department providing hands-on support for domestic non-income tax audits. The role is responsible for managing sales and use tax / business license tax / gross receipts tax, and other indirect tax audits, providing tax technical support to Indirect Tax colleagues and to Company's operational personnel, assisting with various process improvements that enhance the Company's sales and use tax / business license tax, and other Indirect Tax functions, and mitigating risk. A successful candidate will have a forward-thinking vision and the ability to work with multiple business partners to achieve results. This role reports directly to the VP of Indirect Tax but will work closely with all members of the Indirect Tax Team and will routinely interact with Company operational personnel at all levels, including the various business units, up to and including senior management. This role will have responsibility for 3 - 5 direct or indirect reports (tax professionals).
This job is based in Irving, Texas, and we will return to our offices once it is safe to do so.
Responsible for managing state & local tax audits by evaluating information requests and developing strategies to successfully defend tax filing positions, including both developing effective working relationships with tax authority representatives and representing and negotiating with the tax authorities on the Company's behalf to resolve indirect tax audits or controversy matters
Under general direction of the Vice President of Indirect Tax the Senior Manager / Director - Indirect Tax - Audits is responsible for managing the indirect tax audit function, including resolutions through settlements, appeals, and protests, for the Company and all US affiliates for sales and use taxes, business license tax, CAT, gross receipts, and other indirect taxes (except personal property and real property) and may be responsible for managing the Unclaimed Property function, including reporting, recovery, and audit administration
Responsible for the supervision and management of indirect tax professionals and outside professional firms engaged to provide services relating to indirect tax audits, Unclaimed Property compliance and recoveries activities, or other assigned projects
Collaborate with internal / external personnel concerning merger / acquisition / disposition audit responsibilities, management, and resolution
Compute and manage indirect tax audit accruals, not including property tax, and interface with internal FP&A and accounting colleagues concerning related relevant accounting entries
Partner with Businesses as a key tax department resource for indirect tax issues by timely responding to business queries relating to non-income tax matters, and partner with direct reports and engage with other staff / peers to foster exceptional and productive internal and external relationships
Drive process improvement projects to streamline and enhance current processes
Manage special projects including planning and conducting tax research and analysis and preparing memorandums to document conclusions and, in conjunction with the tax planning and research group, determining the impact of tax legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments as well as tax rulings, audit and administrative determinations in the indirect tax area
Demonstrate ability to lead not only team members but peers inside and outside the Tax department to ensure timely and effective responses to tax authorities, as required
Summarize audit results for communication to / with Indirect Tax colleagues to ensure compliance and updates to systems / TDMs, etc.
Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures to achieve organizational goals

Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 9+ years of professional experience and 1+ years of supervisory and/or management experience.
9+ years of relevant indirect tax experience / managing State and local tax audits, including a deep understanding of indirect tax systems and laws
Big 4 or corporate industry experience in a multi-corporate / multi-state environment preferably in distribution or healthcare industry
3+ years managing tax professionals
Strong indirect tax technical background enabling evaluation, development, and leadership in the implementation of tax audit techniques and resolution
Demonstrated analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
Demonstrated organization skills with a proven ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
Proven ability to work cross-functionally and influence / lead change where no direct authority exists
Proven oral and written communication skills including the ability to convey complex tax topics in a non-technical, clear manner to non-tax team members and effectively work with and communicate with all levels within the organization
Demonstrated competence in meeting required deadlines with high degree of accuracy in a time sensitive environment
Demonstrated ability to work individually and as a team player with the ability to support cross functional goals
Strong presentation skills
Additional Knowledge and Skills
Demonstrated competence in compliance activities, including data retrieval, analysis, reconciliation, and reporting
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Proficiency with SAP, JD Edwards, and PeopleSoft, preferred
Proficiency with Vertex O, Q, Cloud
Proficiency with Exemption Cert Management System, a plus
Proficiency with Tax Research Tools - CCH, RIA, TTR, etc.
B.S. Accounting, Finance, or Tax or related field required
Graduate degree, CPA, and/or CMI preferred
